In 2023, Reel Youth had the privilege of facilitating and shooting this film at the Dehcho Youth Conference in Ft Simpson, NT. The conference brought together young people to engage in meaningful discussions, share their experiences, and deepen their understanding of Dehcho teachings.
Our workshop on the fundamentals of filmmaking empowered participants to explore storytelling through a creative lens. We guided the youth in capturing footage of the conference, encouraging them to document their insights and the vibrant discussions taking place. While the majority of the filming and interviews were conducted by our Reel Youth facilitator, the young attendees played an essential role in shaping the narrative.
The result of this collaborative effort is a powerful film that not only highlights the themes of the conference but also showcases the voices and perspectives of the Dehcho youth. We are excited to share this film, which celebrates the accomplishments of the Dehcho Youth Conference and the value of bringing young people together to learn, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Dehcho territory.
In our work we strive to embody what we hope to see in the world—a just humanity and community in which people are free to be themselves fully and without fear. A community where no one is exiled or silenced because of gender, gender expression, race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual/affectional orientation, age, class, physical character or disability. We believe in the power of storytelling to make connections across difference.
