The Reel Youth Youth and Elders Filmmaking Program took place in Terrace, BC, as a unique collaboration with K5T. This hands-on initiative empowered young filmmakers to explore their creativity while building meaningful connections with local elders.
K5T is a thriving, community-driven organization dedicated to shaping the future workforce of Northwest British Columbia. By promoting employment, education, and skills training, K5T created opportunities for personal and professional development. Their balanced approach ensured support for individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, fostering leadership and growth in the community.
In this program, youth participants gained hands-on experience in various aspects of filmmaking, from storytelling to editing. They used film as a medium to express their unique perspectives and collaborated with local elders to create short documentaries that highlighted their lives and experiences. This program served not only as a platform for artistic expression but also as a bridge between generations, promoting understanding and respect within the community. We invite you to explore the resulting three inspiring films that celebrate this meaningful journey of storytelling and connection!
In our work we strive to embody what we hope to see in the world—a just humanity and community in which people are free to be themselves fully and without fear. A community where no one is exiled or silenced because of gender, gender expression, race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual/affectional orientation, age, class, physical character or disability. We believe in the power of storytelling to make connections across difference.
